Never mind the confusion in guidelines between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland the deluge of online education events has been almost overwhelming!
Implant companies tell me the thirst for online education has been huge. No surprise, I suppose, as the last thing dentists are good at is twiddling their thumbs, doing nothing.
However, as I see the broader picture of education portrayed through various news broadcasts, debates and what is being offered online I cannot help but look back at the history of SmileTube.tv and smile. I accept there is not a lot to smile about at the moment, so, why do I smile? Eleven years ago, let me say that again, eleven years ago, I said there is no real need for dentists to take time away from their business, family, home or office to attend lectures at some distant location. The learning can be delivered online in a way that can fit around your business and family life.
Fast forward to today, I think my statement has been confirmed. University students are attending lectures at home. Dentists are doing the same. Unfortunately, it has taken the current crisis to help people realise this. It has been quite flattering to see some other course providers try to follow in our footsteps.
More significantly however, eleven years ago I was also promoting the importance of engaging and interactive- learning as opposed to the e-publishing events that were, and still are, so common. Consider sitting through a conventional lecture, your mind wonders as you consider the traffic on the way home, the cost of the lecture due to lost time in your practice or even what’s for dinner? The learning opportunity has gone! It does not need to be like that!
Technology has continued to move on, as we engage with virtual reality, enhanced reality and mixed reality, distance learning will become ever more exciting and rewarding for everyone involved.
Don’t worry though, I am not suggesting there is no need for face to face learning. That is why the SmileTube programme was developed around a Blended-Learning model.
As pioneers in this field and with our proven eleven-year track record, our company, ProfiVision Ltd., is now helping other course providers get their programme online in an engaging and interactive way.
